Richie released groundbreaking tracks such as ‘F.U.’ and ‘Substance Abuse’ on his Plus 8 imprint in 1991 under the cryptic pseudonym F.U.S.E. (Futuristic Underground Subsonic Experiments), which left a lasting impression on the young techno scene in Detroit and beyond. With ‘Dimension Intrusion’, the 22-year-old Canadian released his first full-length studio album as F.U.S.E, largely inspired by sci-fi films and available vintage synthesizers and drum machines. Playing with their electronic-warm sound effects, heady manipulations of the Roland TB-303 acid sound emerged, creating an influential style that would have a lasting impact on electronic music. The tracks, ranging from club-based techno to soundtrack ambient, were in retrospect experiments from which Hawtin’s characteristic, acid-laden Plastikman sound would soon emerge. The reissue with original artwork by Richie’s brother Matthew Hawtin was remastered in 2019.
